Lively Letters - Refreshed!

WITH JULIE WILDMAN

In-person Workshop at Carnegie Mellon University

Saturday and Sunday, November 15-16, 2025 • 10am - 5pm

COST: $135 MEMBERS • $155 NON-MEMBERS

Prepare to loosen up and have a "wild" time in this two-day workshop where we will explore new ways to bring life to your lettering, both traditional and funky. Our lettering will involve monoline, broad-edged, and pointed pen styles; we will also use some unusual lettering tools. Working with black on white, white on black, walnut inks, watercolors, paint and gel pens, and various papers, we will be able to produce unusual and creative letters and marks.

Students will be led through a series of exercises that will focus not only  on their lettering, but also principles of design including layout, composition, and consideration of negative space.  Decision-making will also be addressed, involving placement of the next letter or word, where and when to apply color; and what constitutes a pleasing composition.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels, but familiarity and experience with various calligraphic hands is highly encouraged, as we free up our lettering skills and tap into that playful, "dancing" well inside each person.
