Have Fun with Flourishing in May with Calligraphy Guild Pittsburgh!

You're invited to join the guild for an afternoon of calligraphic flourishing led by our president Karen Nordstrom Roberts.

You'll have fun flourishing whether you write with a broad-edge pen or a pointed pen. Most importantly, you'll learn there are underlying rules of flourishing that take your flourishes from ordinary to extraordinary.

We'll start as a group working with pencil then breakdown the process for 1) broad-edge pens used primarily for traditional calligraphy styles and 2) pointed pens used for copperplate and modern calligraphy.

Spring 2025 In-Person Workshop

n

Breaking the Rules

with Mike Gold

Carnegie Mellon University

Saturday and Sunday, April 26 - 27, 2025 • 10am - 5pm

In this workshop, we examine the rules that guide formal hands in order to understand how and why to break those rules. Through a series of exercises, students will create non-traditional, informal, and even abstract letterforms and compositions in order to look beyond traditional, formal calligraphic styles.

Participants will practice with a variety of tools, writing surfaces, and media as they gain an appreciation for ways of lettering that may be more suitable for contemporary, commercial, personal, and fine art. Important layout and design strategies will be incorporated into the sessions, and the posting and sharing of individuals’  work will provide inspiration and feedback for all.

Members, please join as invited calligraphers to participate in a regional calligraphy exhibit at the Artist Hand Gallery & Expresso Bar in Indiana, PA.  Our guild will be the predominant feature of the exhibit which will also include some work from emerging calligraphers from the Indiana, Pa. area.

The exhibit will be on view from October 10 to November 3, 2025

An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, October 10 at 6 - 8 p.m.  All members are invited to attend, especially those with pieces in the exhibit. We'll also be invited to participate in a Talk & Demo on Saturday, October 18 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Artists Hand is a fine art gallery/coffee shop on the main street of Indiana, PA. They hold monthly exhibits featuring a vast array of talented artists from Western Pennsylvania. The owner, Brian Jones, is a retired IUP professor who takes great care to provide a quality, professional experience for the artists and his patrons.

    CALLIGRAPHY REQUIREMENTS:

Each member may submit between one and five pieces. We welcome all calligraphic art from advanced beginners to experienced. The only requirement is that it must be submitted in a way that is hangable and be available for sale.

    PRICING:

There will be a one-time $10 fee for each participant - the fee is $10 no matter how many pieces you submit. Types of work that may be submitted:**

    • Original calligraphy art pieces (preferred)
    • High-quality, framed, ready-to-hang reproductions (Reproductions of originals in the exhibit are not accepted)

The calligrapher keeps 55% of the sale and the gallery keeps 45%. The price you list should be the total price (your price plus gallery commission). Price your pieces based on a fair market value considering the commission and the amount of time, art, and expertise involved.*

For example, a 16" x 20" piece of calligraphy with a significant amount of text and/or with artwork included, could sell in the price range of $250-500.

    A piece that is 8" x 10" with a simple quote/simple decoration in a frame, could sell for +/- $75.

    Therefore:

A piece that sells for $250, the calligrapher would receive $137.50.

A piece that sells for $500, the calligrapher would receive $275.

A piece that sells for $75, the calligrapher would receive $41.25.

Framed reproductions typically sell for less than half the price of an original. Price accordingly.

ONLY THE ARTIST CAN DECIDE WHAT THEY ASK FOR THEIR WORK!

    1. REGISTER:

Register your pieces online. Follow the instructions on the guild's website when you register.

Register by September 15, 2025 via the guild's website

    2. DROP OFF:

Please plan to drop off your exhibit pieces at the FRONT of the Margaret Morrison Building on CMU's campus.

Participants will be asked to sign an Agreement with the Gallery when dropping off their artwork.

September 28, 2025 (Before the Annual Meeting & Play Day)

5001 Margaret Morrison Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213

Drop off between 12:30 and 12:45 PM

    on Sunday, September 28

    3. PICK UP:

We will announce arrangements for pick up of your pieces after the exhibit - either at a future guild event or at a members' home close to your area.

    PREPARATION OF PIECES - INSTRUCTIONS:

Your work should be in a quality frame and be ready to safely hang. A painted canvas wrapped around a wood frame with a wire for hanging is acceptable. A plexiglass floating frame with a wire for hanging is also acceptable.

Required method of hanging: A secure wire with eye hooks placed approximately 1/3 of the way down on the sides of the frame.

Unfortunately, pieces that are unable to be hung safely will not be placed in the exhibit.

Please complete a tag for EACH submission and tape it to the back of your submissions.

    * QUESTIONS:

    If you have questions about:

    1) how to set a fair price for your work,

    2) how many pieces to submit (if you want to submit more than five),

    3) to make arrangements to drop off your pieces on a different date,

please send an email to the event chair, Cindi Kordell at: cindikordell@yahoo.com

** The gallery owner, in coordination with the event chair, will make the final determination on work that will be hung in the show - if for some reason the work is not suitable for the exhibit. The calligrapher can assume their work will be hung in the exhibit unless otherwise informed.

Participation in the exhibit is open to current members. Our membership year starts August 1, 2025 - make sure you are an active member when you register.

Looking forward to seeing all your work in the exhibit!
